About Us
Adelaide Survivors Abreast Dragon Boat Club Inc was established in 2005.
While breast cancer occurs predominantly in women, it can also occur in men and we believe it is important to raise awareness about this.
ASA members promote breast cancer awareness by training and fundraising to compete in dragon boat racing locally, intrastate, nationally and at times, internationally.
Our aim is to support those living with, or who have gone through the trauma of breast cancer, by encouraging them to participate in the sport of dragon boating, either in a social capacity or by racing with a competitive spirit, as a way of celebrating life and “seizing the day”. In doing so, we promote breast cancer awareness and the early detection of breast cancer, especially in younger men and women.
Our club is also a member of Male Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) which is based in USA as a way of promoting that "Men get breast cancer too” with the hope that more men in South Australia will join in with us in promoting this aim.
Each year Adelaide Survivors Abreast donates a percentage of funds raised throughout the year to a cancer-related organisation. Current financial support goes to the Otis Foundation.
ASA is also proud to have introduced dragon boating to the Copper Coast through a successful grant application in 2009 from the Office of Sport and Recreation. This has now opened up the doors for DBSA holding regattas on the Wallaroo Marina.
ASA is now supporting membership at Mannum where a team has been formed under the name of ASA Mannum Paddlesteamers.
